Sunday’s Reflection

THE CAPACITY TO EXPRESS vulnerability is a great human strength. We sometimes wish our vulnerabilities would disappear so we wouldn’t have to worry about hiding them. Without these pesky vulnerabilities, we could convince the world that we have it all together, that we have no unsatisfied needs, that we can care constantly for others and never need care ourselves. It is hard to let people see our vulnerable parts — our fears and insecurities, our sadness and shame. To express vulnerability requires courage. Only in exercising this courage, in bravely showing our “weakness” to another, do we achieve a form of real power — the power to ask for help when needed.

Today’s Scripture Reading

With this great cloud of witnesses around us … we too must throw off every encumbrance and the sin that all too readily restricts us, and run with resolution the race which lies ahead of us, our eyes fixed on Jesus.

- Hebrews 12:1-2, REB

This Week …

Special Need:

This Week: Pray for life-giving water. Add your prayer to the Prayer Wall.

Tips for Your Spirit:
Personalizing Scripture: Sometimes we can personalize a passage of scripture by placing our own name in it. Some passages lend themselves to becoming personal prayers as we make ourselves the recipients of God’s Word. Try personalizing scripture.

Saints, Inc.:
This week we remember Radegund (August 13).

Lectionary Readings:

* Isaiah 5:1-7
* Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19
* Hebrews 11:29–12:2

“Don’t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or your importance."
Romans 12:3 Phillips

Known for Humility
The mightiest of the saints were known for their humility. Though Moses had served as prince of Egypt and emancipator of the slaves, the Bible says, “Moses was…more humble than anyone elseâ€

Yes that quote from John is something special. He had a successful ministry and he actually rebuked people from following him! That is pretty exceptional!

I found that it was an ongoing process for me, personally. My old life did not instantaneously disappear. It went it phases. Until one day, I noticed that I didn't want to do the things I had done before or hang around with people who did them.

Then I noticed how changed I had become because my "old" life was gone and I was doing things that had nothing to do with my old ways and life. :) .....the metamorphosis was gradual.

That's why Paul talks about it as clothes. You choose to put them on or take them off. It helps us if we slip, and encourages us to keep putting on the new clean clothes.

Yes, I have had many "slips". I especially like Paul's advice on "doing what I don't want to do and the things I want to do, I don't do!"

His description fits everyone one of us, as Christians. We have all experienced this anguish and been angry with ourselves for being fleshly. It's all in growing in the spirit. The constant battle between flesh and spirit goes on............

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. (Luke 4:1–2)

Jesus was led by the Spirit into a dry, arid place and tempted by “the devilâ€
