Bill Whatcott and Peter LaBarbera arrested on U of R campus

Postby Bill Whatcott » Tue Apr 15, 2014 12:45 am

Dear Friends,

The above video is pretty self explanatory. Peter, myself, and two other pro-life activists peacefully stood on the University of Regina campus and shared the Gospel of Life with students and whoever else chose to interact with us. The pro-homosexual/ pro-abortion side held a counter demonstration. All was well.

Sadly, the university sincerely believes in speech suppression if your views are of a conservative Christian morality type. The police were called, Peter and I were arrested and we are both charged with Mischief and Obstruct Police.

Please pray for Peter. I have been released on my own recognizance and have to appear in court to answer to these charges on May 26th. Peter on the other hand remains in custody and is facing a hearing tomorrow before Border Services.

Notwithstanding, I am Peter's co-accused, our lawyer Tom Schuck has requested I act as Peter's counsel at the immigration hearing. I have no idea where the hearing is going to be held, but I do have the case law (all of it my own) that I can present to the Immigration Arbitrator and hopefully convince him/her that indeed Peter and I have reasonable grounds to believe we were not violating the law and hopefully I can get Peter released from custody tomorrow on his own recognizance, so he can leave Canada on his own. Please pray for this......

Seeing as Tom requested I act as Peter's counsel, I have to call off my prophetic witness and book promotion at the University of Saskatchewan. None the less, just as General Douglas MacArthur said, "I will return." army1

The only caveat being Lord willing and with His grace of course...... pray1

In Christ's Service

Unbelievable, Bill! I think they really have gone too far this time. Every Canadian should urge their MPs to do something about this unjust treatment of a citizen and a peaceful American visitor.

We're behind you guys 100%. Keep us updated and in the loop.

Whatcott, LaBarbera arrested on U of R campus (with video)

REGINA — Police arrested two anti-gay advocates Monday after they refused to leave the University of Regina, where they had set up an anti-abortion display and were handing out material about what they call the dangers of LGBT relationships.

“The materials were graphic and the materials were disturbing,” said U of R provost and vice-president, academic, Thomas Chase after the two-hour ordeal had ended. “The materials, we felt, could harm members of this campus community who we have a duty to protect and support.”

Students had braced themselves for Bill Whatcott and Peter LaBarbera’s visit to campus. The former is a local pro-life and anti-gay activist; the latter the head of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality whose invitation to speak at the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association convention on Saturday in Weyburn caused a stir.

“They’re not open to any message that disagrees with homosexuality,” said Whatcott, who has butted heads with the U of R over pamphleting before.

The UR Pride Centre set up across from Whatcott and LaBarbera, a faceoff of posters and messages that mirrored the situation in Weyburn.

“I think freedom of speech has its limits,” said Pride Centre executive director Leah Keiser, “and when it starts inciting hatred and violence, as I personally believe this has been, that’s a line I think we should stop crossing, because we’re not talking about opinions anymore — we’re actually hurting human beings.”

Keiser said the pride centre was present to offer positive messaging and support for anyone triggered by the anti-abortion and anti-gay material.

The students maintained a level head throughout the afternoon, with only a couple engaging in calm discussion with LaBarbera and Whatcott.

“I’m so saddened to hear we still have to discuss these things, these archaic views,” said Rob Hillstead, a U of R filmmaking student and resident of Weyburn, who debated the pair.

The university’s head of security asked Whatcott and LaBarbera to leave immediately upon their arrival in front of the Riddell Centre. When they refused, the Regina Police Service was contacted.

The police asked the men to leave twice before they were arrested.

Chase said campus security reviewed their material and determined it contravened the Respectful University policy, which doesn’t allow the distribution of information that attacks people on the basis of ethnicity, race or sexual orientation.

“The idea that you can’t have an open debate on homosexuality at a college campus and that some speech code is brought in to kick people off because they have a viewpoint that most students probably haven’t heard — it seems to me it’s pretty undemocratic,” said LaBarbera, who had initially been denied entry to Canada over concerns of hate speech. He appealed and won, under the agreement that he would leave the province by April 17.

Both men have been charged with mischief and have May 26 court dates.

BREAKING: American pro-family activist LaBarbera arrested in Canada
BY JOHN-HENRY WESTEN
Mon Apr 14, 2014
http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/breaki ... -in-canada

REGINA, Saskatchewan, April 11, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A prominent U.S. pro-family activist who was detained by the Canadian Border Services Agency before begin allowed into Canada on appeal, was arrested late Monday on the campus of the University of Regina. Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality was arrested along with Canadian pro-family activist Bill Whatcott.

The pair were at the University with a poster depicting a child killed by abortion and a sign saying ‘sodomy is a sin’. At first Whatcott was asked to leave the campus by campus security accompanied by police. Whatcott responded noting that he had won two court cases (on freedom of speech) adding that “I do believe I have a charter right to speak here.”

Whatcott said that they would have to remove him from campus, because in addition to his charter right, he said, “I believe I have a moral responsibility to share the Gospel with these students.” He added, “I believe this university would not be as rich as it could be if it allowed me to stay here and speak.”

Just before he was arrested Whatcott said to the guard, “I respect you but I’m not going to obey that order because it’s unjust and it’s illegal.”

As he is warned he is about to get arrested he says, “Okay, I’m always a peaceful guy.”

As the officer announces his arrest and cuffs him, Whatcott raised his voice slightly to say, “Students, this is wrong. Even those of you who might disagree with me, we are all less free because of this; everybody loses. There are not any winners.” Whatcott concluded saying “Shame on this university for suppressing speech.”

LaBarbera, surrounded by police, can be heard saying, “I would rather stay in solidarity with him,” referring to Whatcott and he too was arrested.

During Whatcott’s arrest a couple of students can be heard saying that he deserves freedom of speech. But many others, as the two are led away handcuffed, hoot cheers and clap. Hate messages threatening Whatcott and LaBarbera with death can be read in tweets pointing to coverage of the arrest.

The Regina police report on the incident notes that LaBarbera and Whatcott were charged with mischief for “willfully interfering with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property, to wit: the University of Regina”. The police report said:

On Monday, April 14, 2014 at 1:13 p.m., police were dispatched to the University of Regina, in front of the Riddell Centre, for a report of an unwanted guest. When police arrived, they found individuals engaged in a presentation of images and statements. Police learned that University Security had asked the demonstrators to leave U of R property. Police also witnessed this exchange between Security and two adult males. When both men refused Security’s demand to leave, they were taken into custody, without incident, by police. Subsequent investigation, including consultation with the Crown, led to charges against two males, one of whom is a U-S citizen.

Both men were released with a court date of Monday, May 26, 2014.

Prior to entering Canada LaBarbera had been targeted by a makeshift group known as “Intolerance Free Weyburn,” which pressured the government to deny him access to the country. LaBarbera was detained at customs for three hours of intensive search of his belongings and computer before being initially denied entrance into Canada. After an appeal the following day he was allowed in to attend his speaking engagement with the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association.

I see from the explanation of the mischief charge that the wording is very similar to the wording Linda Gibbons noted as being in Mary Wagner's charges when she was arrested at the abortion clinic. If abortion is so benign, why can pictures of abortion be used to justify arrest on the grounds that the individuals holding the signs are threatening to people on campus? The accusation came up in Weyburn also: a question was asked at the Q and A about "what was more threatening", the family supporting pro-love protesters or the provocateurs with the graphic abortion signs? A leading (misleading) question to shepherd Peter into saying something that might cross the hate speech line on Saturday.

Oh, poor puppy! You wanted to get arrested and then did something that would get you arrested. Then you got arrested. And now you're shocked.

To answer the poll question, I don't think it's right to arrest two peaceful protesters who are exercising their rights to free speech in a public-owned university. I don't know how the rule applies in the case of Peter since he's an American citizen but with Bill, he definitely has a right to express himself especially the matters concerning where his tax payment goes.

Now, just a reminder to JimChee and all the whiners who will come to attack the owners of this site, you are welcome to express your thoughts here as long as you observe the house rules which can be found at the Friendly Place forum. Bill and I own this site and we have the discretion who gets to stay or not. Bill is more tolerant and thick-skinned than I am, but if the comments are below the belt, then he/she gets booted.

There's no question of it anymore; we live in a backwards dictatorship under union socialist policing.

Prayers up for you both, Bill.

God bless both of you for standing up for the truth. Is LaBarbera going to get barred from Canada like you are from the US, Bill?

I don't think so, Peter will be returning to Canada for his trial. Keep in mind we are not anticipating a loss. We are anticipating a win and will hopefully force these Marxist dominated universities to quit censoring Christian points of view once and for all......

I see some Catholic international news outlets picked this up and are rebuking the homofascism that is rampant in our culture. Good for them! occasion14
