The ex-wife Lisa Armoyan chose to pursue her ex-husband in court for $29,000 a month rather than settle for the $9500 her ex-husband was willingly paying. She now appears to be doing fitness modeling and is pursuing a Masters in Science and Psychology. She also admits in Frank magazine her ex-husband in 2009 gave her a lump sum of $400,000 yet she claims in court she can't afford to buy groceries. On the reasons for her divorce she told Frank magazine, she initiated the divorce and left in the middle of the night with a police escort because her marriage was "it never was really.... it was alright, but it was never paradise." Meh, I guess being a single mother paying $450 an hour to her lawyer to dig every dime she could out of her ex and facing the reality her ex-husband chose to abscond to the Middle East rather than give his wealth to her made her life a whole lot better now. :icon_rolleyes:

Mr. Armoyan willingly opted to pay 1/3 of $29,000 a month. That works out to over $9500 a month tax free. Had the woman accepted that and not pursued the full $29,000 the court granted her, she would be living very comfortably (a lifestyle I have never attained as I only ever took home $3500 a month working 50 hrs a week as a truck driver) and she wouldn't have had to work a day in her life.

Clearly the guy felt $29,000 a month was unfair, as he saw it as more advantageous to pack in his business, sell his assets and flee to an unstable part of the world than spend his years in North America paying an obscene amount of money that looks more like a wealth transfer, than actual child support or alimony to me.

In a strange way punitive child support laws hurt women in the long run. First of all men and women both lose when men skip on marriage. Men live longer in stable marriages and the benefit of a family gives men a purpose and a source of pride. Women look to marriage as security and family. The neo Marxist judges and socialist politicians who rule the west made marriage look like a trap to most men, so they now refuse to commit to marriage. Both men and women lose, not to mention the nation as family and demographics is a nation's future.

In cases where marriage happens in spite of these feminist inspired laws, they end in divorce 50% of the time and out of that women initiate divorce 70% of the time. Studies have shown the family support laws often make divorce appear enticing to women if the man has a good job. Therefore when the marriage gets rough women will sometimes bail prematurely rather than stick around and work it out as they correctly assume the courts will give them generous alimony and child support.

Some men go along with the child support regime, especially if it is worked out in mutually agreeable counselling, is not too excessive, and the guy gets some say over his kids. However studies show most men abscond when the divorce is acrimonious and the wife goes for the maximum amount of child and spousal support and gets it.

I knew a cabinet maker in this situation. The guy was a tradesman and could make good money. However his wife left him for a family friend, took their three kids and got a judge to award her $2500 month child support. The kids were young and he knew he would be poor for 20 or more years. The cabinet maker became bitter that he would be supporting an adulterous relationship for 20 years. He had no say on the money and figured his ex-wife and boyfriend would do vacations while he worked long hours and lived in a basement apartment and got no real benefit from his labour.

He chose to quit his job and live as a homeless person. Call him a "dead beat" if you will, but in the end he, his ex-wife and kids were all losers. Two years ago the National Post covered another guy in Toronto who laid down on railway tracks and let a train role over him. That guy was an unemployed trucker I remember who fell in arrears. The guy was faithfully paying $1500 a month support (which for a trucker is heavy when times are good) for years. Once he became unemployed paying that was impossible.

The Family Responsibility Office pulled the guy's driver's license ending all hope for the guy. Then the National Post reported the guy killed himself. This happens way to often and ex-wives and judges should realize if they screw a guy too hard, they more often than not end up with nothing.

‘Deadbeat’ N.S. developer who owes $1.7 million in child support flees to the Middle East

HALIFAX — One of the “worst deadbeat” fathers in Canadian history has been sentenced to four years in prison and handed a massive fine for defying a Nova Scotia court order to pay child and spousal support arrears.

But Vrege Armoyan, a Nova Scotia businessman and developer, may never serve a day or pay a dime of the $384,000 fine because he has fled Canada for an undisclosed country in the Middle East. Armoyan failed to appear in a Halifax court on Friday even though a judge directed him to be there in an order issued less than two weeks ago.

Family Court Judge Theresa Forgeron said Armoyan’s “defiance spanned many years” and he owes a “shameful amount of arrears” racked up in a deliberate plan to hide money and to avoid paying support for his three children, ages 20, 18 and 15.

“His children struggle to survive while Mr. Armoyan has millions of dollars,” said Forgeron in handing down the sentence and fine.

Armoyan’s ex-wife joined the hearing via telephone from Florida where she and her three children live. Her lawyer said after the hearing that the case stands out in Canadian legal history.

“This is one of the worst,” said Toronto family lawyer Harold Niman. “On the scale of deadbeats it’s probably the worst deadbeat that I could imagine in any family law case.”

The legal wrangling between Vrege and Lisa Armoyan began in 2009 when the couple separated. Dozens of court appearances have been made both in Canada and Florida since then.

Armoyan was ordered to pay $29,000 a month in child and spousal support in 2012 but never paid the full amount, opting instead to pay about one-third of that. The total arrears total $1,714,684.04. In addition, he also owes just over $1 million in court costs.

Just weeks ago Armoyan told the court via email that he was no longer a resident of Canada but he failed to say where he had moved. However, Niman told the court an email had indicated that Armoyan was in the Middle East. He said the move was part of Armoyan’s plan to evade Canada’s child and spousal support laws.

Armoyan fled Florida and returned to Canada several years ago after a court there sentenced him to 60 days in jail for failing to obey a court order on support.

In 2013, according to court documents, Armoyan sold his luxury yacht in Lebanon and put his Lamborghini on the block for $105,000 and a Corvette for $62,000. At the same time, he received a $2 million tax-free capital dividend and more than $1 million from his mother.

“Tens of millions of dollars have disappeared. (Armoyan) is not living in a cave. … My client can’t afford groceries. She can’t afford to fly here for this hearing,” Niman told court. “Mr. Armoyan is many things, but one thing he is not is stupid. He knows exactly what he is doing.”

Armoyan was found guilty of contempt of court last month. Friday he was required to attend court for a sentencing hearing. Neither he nor his lawyer showed up.

A few minutes after the scheduled time for the hearing to begin a court sheriff opened the courtroom door and yelled: “Is there a Mr. Armoyan here?” The call was greeted with silence.

Armoyan “strategically and tactically” avoided payment and fled the country, Niman told the court.

“Not one case in Canada matches this case. Not one,” he said. “This is the worst possible contempt. He is thumbing his nose at the court process.”

Armoyan will be arrested the moment he sets foot in Canada and begin serving his four-year sentence for contempt of court. But if he pays the arrears, the fine and the court costs he will be released from prison.

At this point, it is unlikely that the warrant for his arrest will ever reach him because his address is now simply “the Middle East.”

A neighbour of mine who once owned his own business had told me that the legal system here in my Cdn. home province made it very difficult for him as a small business operator to collect debts his customers owed him. He had told me that if the legal system here was different, he would have had a much better working life. Now I guess the courts are making it difficult for families by simply not telling them to get their s--t together and work out their relationship instead of going to war against each other. My, how things stink,eh? And we are the stupid ones for putting up with this nonsense. I imagine it will take 40 or 50 years for society to learn from this......

This reminds me of when comedian Eddy Murphy was on the Johnny Carson show in the 1970's. Carson was going through another expensive divorce so Murphy said, " your wife didn't have to clean the house, do any cooking or wash clothes yet she's asking for a million dollars. That is one expensive pussy!"

Yeah, small business sucks. Canada's "privacy" laws (brought to you by the Liberals under Chretien) protects the absconders and fraud artists. If you are a business owner and owed money for your labour Canada's enforcement tools are minimal unless you spend big money on court and go into discovery and even then if the guy who bilked you decides to leave the province and he has no property there is little you can do to get paid for your work or products that you sold to the crook.

Those who enforce "child support" on the other hand don't have to deal with "privacy" laws and their enforcement powers are all encompassing. They can get your banking info, employment records, access your driver's license, etc.... They can garnishee your wage, your bank account, pull your driver's license, cancel your passport, cancel your hunting privileges, take your house, car, RRSP, and if all that isn't enough put you in jail.
